Alright… time to chime in – the hot stove is on fiya!! First off, let’s not get wrapped up in the speculations swirlin’ around these past few days… let’s take it easy with the banquet cancellation rumors and worries about the upcoming season. I don’t really know too much either, but that never shut me up before so lemme giddy up a bit…
For starters, props to Dave Dykes for confirming the banquet and ’08 are A-OK. I never thought either was in jeopardy, but sounds like some of you did, so as the resident PR Grand Poobah, thanks for takin’ a min to set the story straight out in Forumland.
The big story of the week, of course is word that Bill Roth has left the building. My first reaction was “dude, what the hell… what’s up with the silent cut-out… that’s frick-in’ bulls**t, man” but that’s only cuz I like the guy and I’ll miss him being around. I can’t blame him for taking the gig down south. I believe it’s a dirt track (forgot the name but it’s hard to pronounce) and if you talked to Bill at all while he was here, then you should know that is definitely more up his alley – I’m sure he’ll do well there…
Big Red was good people. He welcomed many of my whack-job ideas and gave me complete creative freedom within any of them. I trusted him because he trusted me and vice versa. We were completely different – I’m a mechanically declined stats geek who drinks beer, plays wiffleball and occasionally mixes in some urban slang while making fun of Coby – he’s a red headed southern guy who gave life to our troubled track and was an absolute master of smokin’ a grit with no hands while walking up the grandstands to the booth – but our common ground was the Speedbowl’s success and I got some cool things done while he was callin’ the shots.
The second time I ever spoke to Bill, he mistakenly called me Sal. I think I looked over my shoulder like “which one is Sal?” When someone else in the group corrected him, he politely said “oh, Sid… I’m sorry” to which I said “no problem there Billy Bob” I don’t think we called each other our real names after that… (well, Sid’s not my real name either, but you know what I’m sayin)… Bill even tried bootin’ me from my Family Section perch for havin’ a beer and I still like the guy
Seriously though, I feel the Speedbowl is a better place because he was here. I know you’re out there Billy Bob, so thanks for stoppin’ by the joint and giving us a hand when we needed it. All the best to ya!!!
It’s when the discussion turns to who’ll replace Bill that the rumor mill gets stupid crazy… I’m not even gonna go there cuz… I dunno much more than what this thread’s told me… I’m dyin’ to find out but I’m sure we’ll all know more soon enough…
In the meantime, look forward to the banquet… no matter what news comes about til then, I’m all about gettin’ my drink on and celebrating our 2007 Champs. Next Saturday is for Rob, Bruce, Dwayne, Kenny and Mike so stay focused so we can give them their due… and hopefully along the way we’ll get some news about how the 2008 season will go down. Be optimistic…
