Ah man… what a week!!
So the news has broke that I’ve officially resigned from the Speedbowl Board o’ Directors… and yeah, it’s not a decision I wanted to make. But Shawn’s departure changed alot on my end. It really has nothing to do with the complicated financial end of things, my view was largely creative. Because of that, I never really cared why Terry and Shawn split, the bottom line was that they did, plain & simple… and without Shawn, it completely changed the dynamic of our group.
The dynamic amongst the 5 of us was unique. I mean, c’mon… outside of Cap’n Laid Back (Brian) ya couldn’t have rounded up a more diverse bunch of strong personalities. I had alotta confidence in us collectively to make some drastic changes down at the ‘bowl this year. Don’t get me wrong, Shawn’s departure didn’t mean we couldn’t make changes, but how it would be accomplished did change – and it was a change that I just didn’t hold the same drive to continue.
Ya gotta remember that even though my title was Multimedia guru, my role wasn’t really designed to be anything like what Dykes or Zanardi did for years as the resident PR or Media Relations guy… that’s just not my kinda gig. I wasn’t gonna sit in the press box during race day, I wasn’t going to write all the press releases, etc. It was a much more creative thing… but you can only get so creative if you have all the pieces you need in place. Bottom line was, I had to decide whether I was gonna roll my sleeves up and continue, or bow out for my own personal reasons and let the guys move on without me. As much I beat myself up because it is kinda weak to bail on Terry, Tommy and Brian, the oppurtunity to get the things I wanted to get implemented, with the people I had in place to do ’em with, had just been alterered too much. I couldn’t tell the guys I was gonna pour my heart n’ soul into it when I knew deep down that wasn’t the case anymore… it wouldn’t have been fair to them… or myself… or anybody really
Terry, Tommy, Brian, Mark & Co. will be fine. They can get this thing done. Their approach will be different without me or Shawn, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be successful… just different, that’s all. I think we all just want the ‘bowl to stay around, and although I’ve chosen to step back, I think these cats can pull it off. I’m sure they’ll have more info for us about 2009 coming out soon.
I’m not really going anywhere… I’ll still be around. It’s not like I’m gonna stop supporting the place, the Speedbowl’s still my favorite track.
Stay positive!
See ya soon
Sid
